Sitting within the broader City Planning Department, the Building Team oversees the assessment of building applications, report and consents, building compliance and other technical matters.

As part of the Monash Building team, you will be in a supportive team environment with an emphasis on continuous improvement and personal development and the opportunity to extend your skill set through exposure to varied and diverse building matters.

We are seeking a Student Building Surveyor to fill a full-time 12-month contract position with a strong focus on Building Compliance. Preferably who has completed the statutory education requirements.

About the Position:

While undertaking training as a student, the role will also assist and support the building team in delivering excellent service to team members of Council, applicants, and the broader community. Providing a responsive, prompt, and competitive customer service to the community.

In addition, the role will be an integral member of the Building Team, providing support and working collaboratively to achieve goals.

The Student Surveyor will undertake various duties including:

  • General administrative functions
  • Engage with Council’s customers to assist them with their enquiries, via email, phone calls and counter enquiries
  • Assist other staff where necessary
  • Carry out other functions to support the building unit as required

The officer will be capable of providing detailed information and demonstrate clear and effective communication to team members and internal and external customers.

Skills and Experience:

  • An understanding of Building Act and Building Regulations and associated legislation
  • Ability to assess information provided to Council and provide accurate information to members of the building team
  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members, owners, customers, professions
  • Ability to understand technical information
  • Ability to assist in achieving the desired outcomes
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a respectful and considerate manner
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to an environment that motivates and supports the building team members to achieve high levels of performance

Requirement of the position:

  • Current Employee Working with Children’s Check
  • Satisfactory National Police Check
  • Right to work in Australia
  • The completion or close to completion of the statutory education requirements to obtain Building Surveying or Inspection registration
  • Knowledge of the Building Act, Building Regulations, National Code of Construction and referenced Australian Standards
  • Current drivers’ licence
