Sitting within the broader City Planning Department, the Building Team oversees the assessment of building applications, report and consents, building compliance and other technical matters.

As part of the Monash Building team, you will be in a supportive team environment with an emphasis on continuous improvement and personal development and the opportunity to extend your skill set through exposure to varied and diverse building matters.

We are seeking preferably a suitably qualified Building Inspector to fill a full-time position with a strong focus Building Compliance.

About the Position:

The Senior Building Surveyor will support the Municipal Building Surveyor & Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor in managing the day-to-day delivery of a high quality, cost-effective Building Surveying Service within the municipality. The role will also directly assist and support the Building Surveyor and Student Building Surveyor positions and the border building team in delivering excellent service to team members of Council, applicants, and the broader community. Providing a responsive, prompt, and competitive customer service to the community.

The Senior Building Surveyor will undertake various duties including:

  • Will assist in assessing building permit applications lodge with Council’s building team.
  • Technical support to the building team.
  • Carry out mandatory and non-mandatory inspections as required.
  • Building Compliance inspections and investigations as required.
  • Guidance and support to the roles directly report to and within the Building Team.
  • Assist with technical information to Councils customers, internal & external;
  • Assist other staff where necessary; and
  • Carry out other functions to support the building unit as required.

The officer will be capable of providing detailed information and demonstrate clear and effective communication to team members and internal and external customers.

Skills and Experience:

  • A thorough knowledge understanding of Building Act and Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Ability to assess information provided to Council and provide accurate information to the MBS, DMBS and members of the building team.
  • Ability to accurately detail and report within a timely manner
  • Ability to effectively communicate with team members, owners, customers, professions
  • Ability to understand sometimes complex technical information
  • Ability to assist in achieving the desired outcomes
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a respectful and considerate manner
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to an environment that motivates and supports the building team members to achieve high levels of performance

Requirement of the position:

  • Current Employee Working with Children’s Check
  • Satisfactory National Police Check
  • Right to work in Australia
  • Registered Building Surveyor with the Building and Plumbing Authority
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Building Act, Building Regulations, National Code of Australia and any other relevant legislation.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the desired outcomes with respect to Building Surveying and building compliance
  • Current drivers’ licence
