About the Position:

As the Litter Prevention Officer, you will play a pivotal role in fostering community engagement to minimise litter and illegal dumping. Your mission is to nurture a culture of environmental responsibility among residents and businesses, ensuring our city remains clean and welcoming.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing and nurturing relationships with community members to enhance their involvement in litter prevention
  • Developing Council’s Litter Action Plan and implementing strategic initiatives to reduce litter and dumped rubbish in alignment with the Plan
  • Serving as an Authorised Officer, focusing on proactive measures to address waste management, litter control, and kerbside collection challenges
  • Coordinating efforts to strengthen internal enforcement capabilities and collaborating with various departments to tackle issues related to litter, illegal dumping, and recycling contamination
  • Working in harmony with Waste Services, Community Amenity, and Community Development teams to forge stronger ties with local businesses, property managers, rooming house operators, real estate agencies, and residents
  • Promoting positive behaviours and raising awareness about the impact of littering, driving a community-wide movement towards litter prevention

About you:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of best practice approach to preventing litter
  • Demonstrated experience in applying behaviour change principles to build relationships, increase understanding and gain cooperation
  • A good understanding of local government regulations, statutory requirements, investigation, resolution, and enforcement processes
  • A good understanding of the complex litter challenges within a Local Government environment and proven ability to develop innovative solutions
  • Ability in managing time, setting priorities, achieving goals and meeting deadlines.
  • A high level of self-motivation, initiative, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Commitment to represent Council in court and at events on weekends and to work irregular hours, and overtime. 

Requirement of the position:

  • Degree or Diploma in enforcement, environmental management, sustainability, community engagement and education (or relevant field) along with experience in the subject matter, or lesser qualification(s) with substantial specialist experience
  • Current Victorian Driver’s Licence
  • Satisfactory National Police Check
  • Working With Children Check
