Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) is the Australian home of photography. We champion Australian photography, and inspire audiences to embrace, explore and value photography. As Australia’s only public art gallery wholly dedicated to the collection and promotion of photography, with the only public collection solely dedicated to Australian photography, MGA holds a special place in the country’s network of art galleries and museums.

About the Position:

This is a Maternity Leave position.

The Senior Curator’s key responsibilities are to develop and manage MGA’s art collection and to initiate, research, develop and coordinate the annual calendar of exhibitions. The Senior Curator will have an in-depth understanding of Australian photography and its place within a global context.

Working in collaboration with the Gallery Director, this role will focus on:

  • Developing and maintaining MGA’s art collection
  • Developing and delivering MGA’s exhibition program
  • Building MGA’s relationships within the artistic community

 MGA has over 3,600 items in its collection and specialises in Australian photography. Now considered one of the best collections of Australian photographs in the country, the value and status of MGA’s collection has increased dramatically over the last decade. With guidance from the Director, the Senior Curator is responsible for developing and managing MGA’s collection which includes contributing to the collections policy, driving acquisitions and donated works of art, collection management, conservation, documentation, storage, interpretation and presentation.

MGA’s exhibitions are at the heart of operations. Alongside the Director, the Senior Curator is responsible for delivering on MGA’s robust exhibition strategy to make sure its exhibitions are compelling and meaningfully contribute to arts scholarship the advancement of photography. This includes onsite as well as travelling exhibitions throughout Australia, as well as developing an international touring program.

Skills and Experience:

  • Substantial experience in a similar role in a public gallery or equivalent
  • Degree in Fine Arts, Museum Studies or equivalent
  • Professional knowledge of, and experience in, photography
  • Current Victorian driver's licence

Requirement of the position:

  • Degree in Fine Arts, Museum Studies or equivalent
  • Substantial experience in a similar role in a public gallery or equivalent
  • In-depth understanding of Australian photography and its place within a global context
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and effectively administer curatorial practice to a high standard
  • Professional knowledge and experience in the management of photography collections
  • Strong networks and connections within the artistic community
  • Level of contribution to profession via conference papers, articles and publications or professional involvement
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage resources and budgets effectively
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound computer operation/PC skills, incl. current software packages such as Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate, and gain co-operation and assistance from other employees
  • Well-developed time management skills

Essential Information:

In accordance with the Chief Health Officer direction, all local government employees must be fully vaccinated from 26 November, 2021. Successful candidates will be required to demonstrate evidence of vaccination status or medical exemption prior to commencement.
